I follow the main principle of restoration to always, respect the object. A good restoration should be invisible and marry perfectly with the spirit and history of the piece.
It needs a patient and intense observation of the object in question as well as knowledge, sensitivity, experience, skill and a personal touch. I have to clean, cast or sculpt missing moulding or sculpture and fill missing primer before preparation for gilding and the final patine.
What I love about restoring gilding is the transformation of an object from something oxidized and neglected into a beautiful gilded valued work of art.
